Football:
Sept. 5:
The University of West Florida football team opened the season with a dominant 38-6 win over McKendree, showcasing strong performances throughout the game. Quarterback Marcus Stokes completed 20 of 27 passes for 231 yards, while UWF’s defense limited McKendree to 49 rushing yards. UWF’s special teams were key, with senior Virgil Lemons returning two punts for 147 yards, setting up senior Jamontez Woods for two touchdowns. Sophomore Ralph Ortiz capped the game with a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Sept. 21:
UWF football lost a close 35-33 double-overtime game in their second game of the season. Trailing 20-10 in the fourth quarter, the Argos rallied to tie the game and force overtime. Quarterback Marcus Stokes threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns, with senior Jamontez Woods leading the rushing effort with 40 yards.
Sept. 28:
UWF football suffered a tough 31-7 loss to Grand Valley State. The Argonauts kept the first half close, but Grand Valley State pulled away in the second half. Quarterback Marcus Stokes threw for 102 yards, completing 10 of 27 passes.
Soccer:
Sept. 5:
UWF men’s soccer kicked off its 2024 season with a 2-1 loss to the University of Tampa at home. The Argos took an early lead with senior Keegan Ancelin converting a penalty kick into a goal. Tampa tied the score before halftime and eventually took the lead in the second half.
Sept. 7:
UWF men’s soccer earned its first win of the season in an impressive 5-3 match against Saint Leo. Senior Keegan Ancelin and freshman Mats Flock each scored in the first half, giving UWF a 2-1 lead. After Saint Leo scored two quick goals in the second half, UWF rallied to score three unanswered goals to seal the win.
Sept. 13:
The Argos secured another victory, defeating Rollins College 3-2. Freshman Mar Aegisson scored his second goal of the season, and senior Josiah Fontenot added two more goals. Rollins responded with a goal before halftime, but Fontenot’s second-half goal and strong defensive play helped UWF hold on for the win.
Sept. 20:
UWF men’s soccer extended its winning streak with a 5-2 victory over Mississippi College. Junior Jaime Guillen opened the scoring, but Mississippi College responded with two goals to take the lead at halftime. In the second half, senior Marcus Pereira converted a penalty kick to tie the game, and Guillen added two more goals. Junior Kendrick Hernandez also scored his first goal of the season.
Sept. 22:
The Argonauts battled Delta State to a hard-fought 2-2 tie. Senior Keegan Ancelin scored the first goal, but Delta State responded with two goals before halftime. In the second half, senior Keegan Lynch scored the tying goal in the final minutes of the match.
Cross Country:
University of North Alabama Invitational (Sept. 7):
The UWF men’s cross country team started the 2024 season strong, finishing fourth out of nine teams at the University of North Alabama Invitational. Senior Zach Fenton led the Argos with a time of 24:37.95, the third-fastest time in program history. Fenton placed third overall out of 82 runners.
Argonaut Invitational (Sept. 20):
UWF men’s cross country put on a great performance at the Argonaut Invitational, earning second place out of nine teams. Senior Zach Fenton set a new record, becoming the first Argo to run the course in under 26 minutes. Freshman Grant Chastain also had a strong showing, finishing sixth with a time of 27:14.20.
Golf:
Bearcat Invitational:
The UWF men’s golf team opened the season impressively, finishing second at the Bearcat Invitational. Junior Cooper Tendick led the way as the top individual golfer at the event. UWF took the lead after the first round but was overtaken by North Georgia, finishing second out of 19 teams.
Mizuno Intercollegiate Invitational:
The UWF men’s golf team placed third at the Mizuno Intercollegiate Invitational with a team score of 844 (-20). After a rough first round, the Argos bounced back with a strong second round to finish behind North Georgia and Lee
