Saturday, November 9 the UWF women’s soccer team came up short in their home game match up against the Mississippi College Choctaws, 0-2. This game also marked senior night for the Argos.

Coming into the game UWF (11-5 GSC 8-4) was undefeated at home and was looking to keep that tradition rolling. Mississippi College (14-1 GSC 12-0) came into the contest with an undefeated record against conference opponents and were looking to stay perfect.

Early on, both teams would go back and forth with missed opportunities to score. Then in the 38th minute of the first half, Lady Choctaw midfielder Lauren Kate Carter would score from inside the box.

Putting her team on the board and improving the score to 1-0 with seven minutes left in the first half. Both teams would finish the first half without scoring another goal.

Now in the second half, both teams were looking to out due the other.

Playing with a passion in the final 45 minutes of play, the Argos would outshoot the Choctaws 9-4. However, still scoreless, they we’re unable to find the back of the net.

Then in the 85th minute of the match, Mississippi College would score again this time by forward Erin Hederman; improving the Choctaw lead to 2-0.

“They’re a good team and they have a good goalie,” junior midfielder Annie Rolf said. “We just didn’t play as good as we should have so that’s why it ended up the way it did.”

The Lady Choctaws managed to block seven out of 14 shot attempts made by West Florida. And had an advantage of having four corner kicks opposed to UWF’s three.

“Nobody wants to see senior night go down like this,” senior goalkeeper Esthefanny Barreras said. “But we should take this as a learning experience and try to build off of it as we prepare for the games on Tuesday.”

The next game for the Argos will be on Tuesday, November 12 against the West Alabama Tigers (12-4-1 GSC 10-2-1) at Tiger Stadium for the first round of the Gulf South Conference women’s soccer tournament. Whichever team wins this contest will advance in the tournament and play either #2 Montevallo or #7 Christian Brothers on Friday in Pensacola, Florida.
