Our 5-0 Argonauts are poised for another win this Saturday, Oct. 11, at PenAir Field—and trust me, this Chief needs that win to mentally survive this week.
College homecoming is an all-campus event that brings together students, staff, faculty, alumni and local residents for a week-long celebration of festivities to remind us of our school spirit, our university history and our strong community.
As your editor-in-chief, I have the pulse on the chaos. Here is your official Late Bell Report on why you should brave the campus crowds.
The week is stacked! Events include Homecoming Court festivities, Cardboard Boat Races (Wednesday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.), the Colchis concert (Thursday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with tickets releasing under the water tower after Tuesday’s 6 p.m. volleyball game), Golden Fleece challenges and tailgating. You can find a full schedule of events here. Also, make sure you are following all the UWF pages on your favorite social media platforms to stay in the know now, and have it show up in your feed for this week and weeks to come.
The Meaning of the Mission
Argonauts from Greek mythology were a band of heroes who undertook one of the most famous voyages of the pre-Trojan War era. The mythological tale of the Argonauts remains one of the most enduring Greek myths, inspiring countless retellings, films and literature, and giving us a word for adventurers across centuries.
The word “Argonaut” is used historically to mean: an adventurer/voyager that engaged in dangerous, yet potentially rewarding quests or adventures. Like those that rushed to California during the Gold Rush of 1849 that were widely nicknamed Argonauts for their dangerous journey to seek a massive, golden prize (the modern “Golden Fleece”).
Having Argie as our mascot reminds us that our educational endeavors are inspired by that quest, symbolizing adventurous individuals seeking new experiences and challenges.
Alongside Argie, we have the nautilus to remind us of spiritual growth and improvement, order amidst chaos, and resilience and exploration.
Minimal-Effort Argo Spirit
If you are not into sports, that is okay. If you have to work and cannot make the game, that is okay too. If events are too peopley for you, it is also perfectly acceptable. (This Chief understands. Trust me.)
Still, there are minimal effort ways to partake. Here is a short list of three things anyone can do as you go to and fro to help unleash the Argonaut and Nautilus spirit in you:
- Don some blue and green and embrace your inner Argo this week! (Stop in at the campus bookstore for needed ‘fit pieces and Argo swag).
- Compliment a stranger.
- Greet others in passing with “Go Argos!”
Also, please remember: Do not add to the population, do not subtract from the population, and do not end up in the hospital, the newspaper, or jail. If you do end up in jail, establish dominance quickly.
This is your editor-in-chief ringing the klaxon! It’s HOCO Week Argo Nation! Let’s celebrate!
The Klaxon has sounded! May your homework be easy, your coffee strong, and may you have numerous golden fleece accomplishments this week!
I bid you all peace. ✌️
Respectfully,
Megan Walters
