From dominant performances to nail-biting draws, UWF athletics hit the ground running this past weekend across multiple sports. Whether on the field, the court, or the course, the Argonauts made their presence known, and the rest of the Gulf South Conference is taking notice.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s team opened their season with flair on September 4, earning a 3–1 win over Flagler. Just three days later, they faced off against Embry-Riddle in a tough battle that ended in a 2–2 draw. While the scoreboard didn’t favor a win, the Argos showed resilience, pace, and attacking power.
Olof Thorvaldsdottir, earned GSC Offensive Player of the Week honors on September 9. Her aggressive play and sharp eye on the goal helped lift the Argos early in the season.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s team is building chemistry early in the season, playing two close-fought draws. On September 4, they dropped the opener but bounced back with a 1–1 result vs. Saint Leo on September 6. It’s clear the team is still finding its rhythm, but the defensive structure is beginning to take shape.
Football: Running Backs Lead the Charge in Season Opener
Under the bright lights on September 6, UWF football started their campaign strong with a statement win over Kentucky Wesleyan, 28-7. The secret weapon? A dominant running back trio, who carved up the field with a balanced and bruising attack.
While the final score says it all, what stood out was the energy on both sides of the ball. UWF looked confident, physical, and well-prepared, and with tougher matchups ahead, this win sets the tone for the season.
Volleyball
The SpringHill Suites Invitational saw the women’s volleyball team rise to the challenge, finishing the tournament with a 3–1 record. After splitting matches on Friday (Sept. 5), they found their rhythm on Saturday.
Senior leader Emma Mire was everywhere on the court. She was named GSC Defensive Player of the Week, anchoring a defense that stepped up when it mattered most.
Cross Country: Women Win Big at UNA Invitational
The UWF women’s cross country team stormed the course at the UNA Invitational on September 5, claiming first place in dominant fashion.
Meanwhile, the men’s team showed grit, finishing 7th out of 14 teams, with room to climb as the season progresses.
For fans looking to learn more about the personalities behind the podiums, this week’s Cooling Down With Coach (Sept. 8) featured Jessica Chappell and Carson King, two runners bringing experience and leadership to the program.
