Volleyball:
SpringHill Suites Invitational (Sept. 6-7):
UWF volleyball opened the 2024 season strong, beating Wheeling 3-1 before falling short to Southwest Minnesota State. Against Wheeling, standout performances included sophomore Gabi Moulton, who made history with UWF’s first-ever triple-double, and seniors Damyah Joyner and Jenna Zydlo, who each racked up 15 kills. In their second match against Southwest Minnesota State, UWF fought hard but lost in three sets. Despite the loss, senior Annie Monaco led with 10 kills, and sophomore Gabi Moulton had 33 assists.
UWF finished the SpringHill Suites Invitational with dominant performances over Spring Hill and Oklahoma Baptist. The first set against Spring Hill was hard-fought, but UWF took control and won 3-0. Sophomore Gabi Moulton recorded 31 assists. UWF continued its streak, defeating Oklahoma Baptist 3-0 with Damyah Joyner leading the match with 13 kills.
Outback Invitational (Sept. 13-14):
The University of West Florida’s Argonauts kicked off the Outback Invitational with two wins. Against Wingate, UWF secured a 3-2 victory after five sets. Sophomore Gabi Moulton tallied 50 assists, and senior Annie Monaco led with 18 kills. UWF then defeated Spring Hill 3-1, with senior Damyah Joyner contributing 16 kills and Moulton adding 47 assists.
UWF fought hard during the final matches of the Outback Invitational but fell short in back-to-back matches against Florida Tech and Northwest Missouri State. Against Florida Tech, UWF took the first two sets but couldn’t stop a comeback, losing 3-2. Senior Gabi Moulton finished the match with 48 assists, and senior Damyah Joyner had 16 kills. Against Northwest Missouri State, the Argonauts lost 3-2 in a hard-fought match. Sophomore Caiden Largent led with 14 kills, while sophomore Emily Breazeale earned her first-ever double-double with 13 kills and 24 digs.
Sept. 20:
UWF lost a close match to Florida Southern after five sets, 3-2. The Argos won the first and third sets, but Florida Southern rallied to take the match. Freshman Magdalena Vongkasemsiri added 13 kills and four blocks, while senior Jenna Zydlo led the match with 15 kills.
Sept. 21:
The Argonauts faced the Tampa Spartans in a short match, losing 3-0. Sophomore Gabi Moulton led with 23 assists, and sophomore Emily Breazeale added seven kills.
Sept. 24:
The University of West Florida’s Argonauts swept Valdosta State, posting strong stats. Sophomore Emily Breazeale led with 13 kills, while senior Jenna Zydlo was close behind with 11 kills.
Sept. 27:
The Argonauts dominated their match against the Lady Bulldogs for their third annual Silent Set Night, sweeping 3-0. Sophomore Emily Breazeale and freshman Magdalena Vongkasemsiri combined for 21 kills, and sophomore Gabi Moulton added 22 assists.
Sept. 28:
UWF secured a win against Christian Brothers, starting strong with a big lead in the first set and carrying that momentum to a 3-0 victory. Sophomore Kumara Flanagain led with 14 kills, and sophomore Gabi Moulton added 33 assists.
Soccer:
Sept. 6:
The University of West Florida women’s soccer team started its season with an impressive 3-0 shutout against Southwest Minnesota State. Senior Mya Swinton scored the first goal and added a second in the second half. Junior Megan Gettys scored the second goal, assisted by senior Emma Beltz.
Sept. 8:
UWF’s match against Minnesota State ended in a 0-0 draw, with senior Julieta Limardo leading UWF’s shot attempts. Goalkeeper Maciah Lipsey recorded two saves.
Sept. 13:
The Argonauts added another win to their record with a 2-0 victory over Lynn. Junior Megan Gettys opened the scoring just before halftime with an assist from senior Emma Beltz. Later, Gettys assisted Beltz on her goal.
Sept. 15:
The Argonauts suffered their first loss of the season against Flagler College. Flagler scored two early goals to take a commanding lead. Senior Mya Swinton scored UWF’s only goal of the night in the 2-1 loss.
Sept. 20:
UWF women’s soccer earned another win, defeating Mississippi College 3-0. Senior Julieta Limardo led the charge with two first-half goals, and senior Emma Beltz added a goal in the second half.
Sept. 22:
UWF notched another win, sweeping Delta State 3-0. Seniors Kendall Blackmon and Emilie Dueck Doerkesen scored the first two goals, while freshman Jillian Thompson netted the third.
Sept. 30:
The Argonauts claimed their final win of September in a hard-fought match against Spring Hill, winning 3-2. Senior Julieta Limardo scored UWF’s first goal and later converted a penalty kick to give UWF the lead. After Spring Hill responded, senior Emilie Dueck Doerkesen scored the winning goal.
Cross Country:
University of North Alabama Invitational (Sept. 7):
The UWF women’s cross country team had a strong start to the 2024 season, placing third out of nine teams at the University of North Alabama Invitational. Junior Chloe Rook led the team with a fourth-place finish. Freshman Sydney Orth placed 13th and set a personal record with a time of 19:16.03.
Argonaut Invitational (Sept. 20):
UWF performed well at the Argonaut Invitational, finishing second out of eight teams. Junior Chloe Rook placed fourth out of 91 runners with a time of 19:56.20. Junior Gwendelyn Shamel placed 11th with a time of 20:30.30. The Argos finished behind Ouachita Baptist but outplaced nationally ranked teams like No. 8 Shelton State and No. 12 Gadsden State.
Golf:
Full Moon BBQ Invitational (Sept. 9-10):
UWF women’s golf began the 2024 season with a strong performance, placing second out of eight teams at the Full Moon BBQ Invitational. After a slow start, the Argos bounced back on the second day to secure second place.
Savannah Lakes Fall Invitational (Sept. 23-24):
The Argonauts continued to impress at the Savannah Lakes Fall Invitational, placing fifth out of 15 teams. Senior Alia Scotka led UWF, shooting three consecutive rounds of 72 for a final par of 216, earning her a third-place finish.
