A new student-run club at the University of West Florida invites runners of all levels to join group runs. Founded by Pedro Mendez, the club offers a fun way to stay active and connect with the local community.
Partnered with @ochocincozero, also managed by Mendez, the nonprofit shares event details on Instagram @runclub850, posting the location and time of each run earlier in the week. On the day of the run, participants can RSVP through an Instagram story poll, though everyone is encouraged to simply show up.
The Team Behind the Movement
Mendez, @pedrowendez on Instagram, proposed the run club to build a new campus community and promote a healthy lifestyle.
“I just thought of the idea and brought my boys in,” Mendez said, referring to core group members Caleb Shelby, Jaden Hamman, Cristian Garcia, and Zach Furness.
Their collective energy has helped runners feel welcome and established @runclub850 as a growing campus fixture. The club provides post-run snacks and drinks for participants.
Run Options for All Levels
The runs are held biweekly on the university’s scenic campus, offering two route options for all levels. Runners can choose between a traditional 5K (3.1 miles) or a shorter 1.6-mile route. Whether you’re training for a race or just staying active, the club has something for everyone.
How to Join
To participate, follow @runclub850 on Instagram for updates on upcoming runs. The next run is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 19, at 8:50 a.m. It will start at the same location as the previous run: 11000 University Parkway, Pensacola, FL 32514. Organizers and participants will warm up with stretches before the run.
On the day of the event, the club will post an RSVP poll on Instagram to allow students to confirm attendance. However, no commitment is required,
participants can join at their convenience, whether easing into running or seeking a new challenge.
