A chain of disturbances in the Gulf of Mexico is forecast to strengthen into a storm, and eventually a hurricane, by Tuesday, Sept. 24. Experts are urging residents in Florida’s Panhandle and Big Bend regions to prepare for hurricane conditions.
As of 6 p.m. Monday, the NOAA’s National Hurricane Center refers to the system as “Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine.” If it develops into a storm, it will be named “Helene.” Helene would be the fourth hurricane to make U.S. landfall this year.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency for 41 counties, including Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa.
Implications for UWF and Residential Students
The University of West Florida is closely monitoring the storm with the National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama, and the Escambia County Department of Public Safety. A “hurricane watch” is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated onset of tropical-storm-force winds, while warnings come 36 hours in advance.
On-campus residents are urged to set evacuation plans, review the HRL Severe Weather Guide, and monitor the university’s weather links for updates. Residents should check bulletin boards frequently for important notices.
UWF’s hurricane shelter for residential students is located in Building 72 (HLS). Notifications for sheltering or evacuation will be issued in a timely manner to ensure student safety.
