In an effort to connect with students outside of her office, Dean of Students Dr. Mary Anderson hosted a ping pong tournament this past week on campus. Held in the university commons gaming area, the event featured free food, giveaways, and the coveted prize for anyone who managed to beat Dr. Anderson’s paddle: an “I Beat the Dean” T-shirt to commemorate the victory.
The tournament attracted students from all classes and majors, with Dr. Anderson facing each player in a one-on-one, high-stakes match.
Despite a slow start with only a few initial sign-ups, the tournament quickly became the center of attention. Students formed a crowd, encouraging one another to sign up and face the dean.
“It’s really great to see Dr. Anderson interacting with students,” said sophomore Wayne Neal, one of the competitors. “Building that connection can make the difference to a lot of students”.

Dr. Anderson also took this opportunity to highlight some of the services offered at the university, with representatives from Student Services and the Argo Pantry both tabeling at the events, answering any questions students may have.
“It’s a lot different than having someone come speak to the class,” said junior Josh Griffith. “You kind of start forgetting that it’s the dean in front of you instead of just another player.”
