With record-breaking temperatures increasingly becoming the norm, it’s important to know how to stay safe and cool during these brutally hot months. Whether you’re a Florida native or new to this climate, these few tips can help you beat the summer heat and make the most of your time on the Emerald Coast.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate:
The first and most important tip is to always stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you at all times and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Opt for water and electrolyte-rich beverages to replenish your body’s fluids. Easier said than done, but try to avoid caffeinated, sugary or alcoholic drinks on a hot day, as they can further dehydrate you.
Plan outfits accordingly:
Wearing the right clothing can make all the difference in staying cool. You should use lightweight, breathable fabrics such as nylon or linen, and choose lighter colors that reflect sunlight rather than absorbing it- basically, you want to avoid all black clothing, long sleeves, jackets, jeans etc. Most importantly, don’t forget to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from intense and harmful UV rays.

Take advantage of the campus swimming pool or nearby beaches, such as Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, Orange Beach, Navarre, Okaloosa Island and more for a refreshing dip- we live in paradise so take advantage. Consider exploring local Florida springs or rivers for a fun day trip that offers a way to relax and cool off.
Be mindful of food choices:
Your diet can also aid in keeping you cool during the summer. Be mindful of what you are consuming and go for light, refreshing meals like salads, fruits and cold sandwiches. Do your best to avoid heavy and greasy foods that can make you feel sluggish and uncomfortable on a hot day. Incorporate hydrating and nutritious foods like watermelon, cucumbers and oranges into your diet to increase your fluid intake naturally.
