On Wednesday, November 13 the University of West Florida men’s basketball team lost their home opener against the Webber International Warriors ,76-62. This marks the third loss in a row to start the season for the Argos.

The Argonauts (0-3) came into the game 0-2 on the season and looking to get back on track against the Warriors. On the other hand, the Webber International Warriors (2-4) were coming off a blowout victory over Pensacola Christian College, 88-65.

UWF freshman guard Daniel Sofield led the Argos with 17 points on 6 for 13 shooting with five shots coming from beyond the arc.

Junior guard Cameron Cox had a career high 16 points going 6 for 11 from the field and had a game high four assists. McCook College transfer Chinedu Okonkwo led the Argos with a team high eight rebounds in 15 minutes of action.

Sofield was the star of the second half for the Argos scoring 12 points, hitting four three pointers in a row.

Webber International raced out to a 12-point halftime lead and never looked back. UWF was able to cut the deficit to eight making it 63-55 at the 5:56 mark of the second half. But the Warriors went on a 13 to 7 run to finish off the Argos.

Warriors guard Tommie Luke had a game high 24 points on 10 for 16 shooting with three assists. Webber senior guard Malik Morrow recorded a triple double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes.

In the second half, the Argonauts shot 46.43 percent (13 for 28) from the field, including 45.45 percent (5 for 11) from beyond the arc, but were not able to get out of their own way.

Turnovers were the Achilles heel for the Argos finishing the game with a total of 17. The Warriors took advantage leading the game with 15 points off turnovers alone.

UWF’s perimeter defense was a bright spot, holding the Warriors 5 for 21 on shots from three. But the Warriors were dominant on second chance points outscoring UWF 14 to 6.

Head coach Jeff Burkhamer was clearly frustrated with his team’s effort, saying, “We got to find somebody that can score, we can’t have Daniel Sofield making every shot.”

The Argonauts next match-up is on the road against the Tuskegee Golden Tigers this Saturday, Nov 16 at 3 PM.
