The turning point in the season for the Argos was after their 63-52 loss to Delta State. Suffering from turnovers and offensive struggles, UWF turned over a new leaf and has been on a winning streak ever since.
After that game, West Florida has beaten all but two opponents by at least 10 points and are averaging 72.9 points per game.
Most of this success can be given to UWF coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton and her four senior starters: Toni Brewer, Belle Bistrow, Halee Nieman and Anna Hall.
Brewer is now the winningest player in school history, having won 86 games. She’s also the all-time leader in rebounds with 1,141 in her career.
Brewer also has a school record of 54 career double-doubles and is the second player in program history to play in three NCAA Tournaments.
Bistrow is one of the top 3-point shooters in school history, coming in at number two all-time in 3-pointers made. She also leads the GSC in 3-pointers this season with 77.
In her final season, Nieman is projected to be a UWF top-10 all-time leader in points per game. Right now she averages 17.9 points a game and has amassed 873 points in her career at West Florida.
Hall has been named the top point guard in the conference and has a multi-faceted game. She averages 8.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game. In just one season at UWF, Hall has recorded three triple-doubles, the most since GoArgos.com started tracking the stat in 2011.
“I love watching them play,” UWF student Jeff Dickey said. “I have a class with Anna (Hall), and it’s crazy to see her be a monster on the court and then come to class like nothing happened; they’re an amazing team.”
After being named the team’s head coach in April 2012, Coach Yelton has been critical to the team’s success. In six seasons, Yelton has led the Argos to the NCAA Tournament three times and to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history in 2017.
She’s had multiple players receive All American and GSC honors and shows no sign of stopping any time soon.
With a stout defense and a seemingly invincible offensive scheme, Yelton and the Argos look forward to finishing the season riding their most successful hot streak in program history.
