University of West Florida’s Student Government Association senate held its first meeting Friday, September 6, in the Commons Auditorium.
The meeting marked a new semester for the senate and introduced newly appointed members Jordan Negron, Mario Tobar and Mariah Bush.
Also featured were guest speakers Mckenna Hyman of the Campus Activity Board and Zachary Fisher from the UWF Athletic Department.
Negron was unanimously approved to the position of Budget & Allocation Chair.
“I’m eager to be here,” Negron said. “And I look forward to changing some of the old policies I’ve seen.”
Also unanimously approved was Tobar to the position of University Affairs Committee Chair.
“Even with the young level of experience I have, I’ve been looking back at the work of those previously in this position and do the best I can in the position.” Tobar said. “I’ve been meeting with the University Commons to efficiently use our budget.”
On the agenda was the proposed bill regarding the 2018-19 SGA internal budget, which was presented by treasurer Hunter McCabe. It was ordered a second reading by the senate.
Student body vice president Zenani Johnson revealed plans for a new member-involved SGA event in October. Fresh Market Friday will occur in October and is a volunteer-run food drive emphasizing local farmers’ markets.
Also in Johnson’s announcements was a call for more applications for those interesting in joining the freshmen committee. She also asked for senate members to potentially become a mentor to a first-year student committee member.
