The University of West Florida’s baseball team was victorious for the seventh straight game defeating No. 16 University of Southern Indiana 12-7 on Wednesday to improve their overall record to 12-8.

During this seven-game winning streak, UWF’s offense has scored at least seven runs and has reached double digits in four of those games.

“Early in the season, we just weren’t getting hits with runners in scoring position and finally I think through trial and error guys started changing their approach at the plate,” Coach Mike Jeffcoat said on how his team has improved over the course of the season.

USI jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but in the bottom of the second inning sophomore first baseman Mason Dinesen hit in two runs with a single to tie the game up.

Senior center fielder Brandon Harmon broke up the tie in the third inning after he hit a solo home run to right field fence. Two batters later, junior left fielder Matt Sullivan hit a solo home run of his own this time over the left field fence to give his team a two-run lead.

“The ball was traveling a little bit and he elevated a pitch and I got my hands to hit,” Sullivan said.

The fourth inning started rough for the Argos as USI scored an early run cutting UWF’s lead in half. The Argos responded by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fourth giving them a nine-run lead.

Dinesen started the bottom of the fourth inning by hitting an RBI single his third RBI for the day. Then senior second baseman Nic Strasser doubled home Dineson to give the Argos a three-run lead.

A couple of batters later, senior DH Nick Kerkmann hit a double to center field scoring two more runs. Junior third baseman Joey Bend then hit a triple which brought home Kerkmann extending the Argos lead to six.

Sullivan then came up a drove in Bend giving Sullivan three RBI’s for the game. A few batters later, junior right fielder Bryant Harris hit a two-run double giving as the Argos now lead 12-3 after four innings.

USI attempted to make a comeback after scoring two runs in the sixth inning the bases were loaded with two outs.

USI scored one run in the seventh inning and added another run in the ninth but it was not enough to overcome their deficit as the score read 12-7 in favor of UWF.

UWF senior pitcher Jared Gonzalez picked up his first win of the season as he came into the game in the fourth inning and pitched all the way until the sixth.

UWF will begin a seven-game road trip at Christian Brothers University this Sunday in a doubleheader.
