go Senior forward Darryl Tucker leads the 17th ranked University of West Florida’s men’s basketball team and the Gulf South Conference in a unique way. Missing the first few minutes to relax and focus, Tucker has become a league leader without starting a game.

Tucker embraces his role and has found a home at UWF after a slow start to his collegiate career.

Tucker finished the regular season leading the Gulf South Conference in rebounds per game, fifth in blocked shots, and 11th in points per game. So far this season, the Argos have exceeded their team goals with more than 20 wins, finishing top three in the conference and shooting 70 percent from the free-throw line.

Tucker has been nominated for the 2018 College Slam Dark Horse Dunker Fan Vote competition. This event will be consisting of a weekly online bracket tournament. The top voter will participate in the final-four Dunk Contest. UWF’s students, faculty and staff can vote here.

Sacrificing the entire summer to work on his game, along with taking care of his body, has been rewarding to Tucker this season.

“The weight room is a big one for me at least three times a week,” Tucker said. “Eating healthy along with rehab and being on top of my nutrients with proteins and vitamins.”

Tucker still has his individual goals in sight.

“Player of the year, first team all-conference and All-American,” Tucker said. “I’m almost there.”

Third-year Head Coach Jeff Burkhammer knows how Tucker’s work ethic has developed him into a top GSC player.

“He has become a better all-around player,” Burkhammer said. “He’s gotten stronger, skills have gotten better and he plays with a lot of more confidence.”

Tucker said his favorite thing about basketball is networking.,

“I’ve met a lot of friends from basketball. A lot of people I’ve never dreamed or imagined I’d meet just from one basketball,” Tucker said. “Comraderies and friendships — it’s truly a blessing.”
