Argos historic playoff run continues

The University of West Florida Argonauts football team will continue its historic season by traveling to West Alabama to compete in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals on Saturday. A win would vault the Argos to the Division II semifinals.

Last week, the Argos defeated West Georgia 17-14 to advance to the quarter-final. Although it was not a pretty win, the Argos defense shined through and kept the team in the game with 4 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles.

The Argos will need to bring their best overall game on Saturday to beat the No. 1 seed.  UWF fell to West Alabama 35-18 earlier this season.

The stats of the previous game were much closer than the final score and Coach Pete Shinnick knows that there are areas of improvement for this Saturday’s game.

“We need to fix some things, but we had some successes and we need to play to our strengths,” Shinnick said.

The importance of a game like this to a second-year football program is big, but Shinnick is approaching this game like any other.

“We have to figure out how to put points on the board, but you always are trying to win the game you’re coaching,” Shinnick said.

The Argos have brought a buzz to not only the UWF campus but to the city of Pensacola.  The team is on the verge of being a recognized power in Division II football. Shinnick recognizes how this group of players rely on each other for success.

“We have a great group, a fun group who loves being together,” Shinnick said, “and if they win, they get to stay together a little longer.”

You can catch Saturday’s game on Blab TV or on 97.1 FM, with coverage beginning at 11:30 a.m.
