It was the moment most kickers dream about, and sophomore Austin Williams delivered. With one second left and the Argonauts down 21-20 to Florida Tech, Williams hit a game winning, 44-yard field goal as time expired.

With his game winning kick, Williams not only set the school record for the longest field goal but also helped improve UWF’s record to 3-1 for the season and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play.

“I was kind of scared because it was veering right and right after it went in, everybody was just jumping up and down and I think I threw my helmet 20 yards in the air,” Williams said.

Williams’ game-winner was another highlight of what has been a solid start to the season. Williams, who is 8-for- 9 on field goals this year, went 3-for- 3 on against Florida Tech. The week prior, Williams set a school record with four field goals against Valdosta State.

As a result of these achievements, Williams was named Gulf South Conference Special Team Player of the Week in each of the last two weeks.

Williams transferred to UWF from Victor Valley College, which is located in California. Williams said one of the main reasons for his coming to UWF was the coaching staff.

“I really love the coaching staff here,” Williams said. “It’s a great environment and that is what really drew me here.”

Coach Pete Shinnick said there had been great competition for the kicking job this season but that Williams had established himself as a player in whom the coach could place great confidence.

“I’m not going to lie I thought he was going to have to kick it from 55 yards and I still would have bet on him to make it,” Shinnick said.
