The University of West Florida football team defeated Chowan University 51-23 to improve to 2-0 at the Sept. 16 game.

The scoring for UWF started when senior defensive back Josh Marshall intercepted Chowan’s freshman quarterback Bryce Witt for a 31-yard touchdown.

The game was close heading into the fourth quarter with the Argonauts having a lead of 24-17. UWF outscored Chowan in the fourth quarter 27-6 with the highlight being a blocked punt returned for a touchdown by senior linebacker Quadavis Battle.

With the blocked punt returned for a touchdown, UWF tied a school record for most points ever scored in a game.

One of the game’s highlights was UWF attempting an onside kick after they had gone up 7-0. The onside kick was unsuccessful, but it set the tone for how aggressive the Argonauts were going to be throughout the game.

UWF football coach Pete Shinnick said that the onside kick was planned from the beginning of the game, and he trusted his defense to get the job done if the onside kick failed.

UWF’s biggest advantage came in the running game as the Argonauts had 39 rushes for 133 yards while Chowan had 31 rushes for only 77 yards. UWF’s leading rusher was sophomore running back Chris Schwarz who had 58 yards on 14 rushing attempts.

Sophomore quarterback Mike Beaudry had a solid game throwing for 149 yards and three touchdowns while committing one interception. One of his frequent targets was Chowan freshman wide receiver Ka’Ron Ashley who had two receptions both being touchdowns.

Coach Pete Shinnick said he was very pleased with his team’s overall performance citing the improvements with his offensive line in how they were able to run the ball.

“We are still learning and growing and trying to develop but I will take being 2-0 rather the other way around,” Shinnick said.

UWF will play against Valdosta State at 6 p.m. Saturday at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Visit GoArgos.com for more information on the West Florida football team.
