The Argos faced fifth-in-the-nation Delta State University in a weekend series dubbed “Strike Out for Cancer.”

The series kicked off with a doubleheader on Friday, with the final scores being 7-5 for the first game and 8-0 for the second — both in Delta State’s favor.

During the first game’s first inning, Delta State immediately scored. However, during the bottom of the first inning, Argo Brandon Harmon singled to third base and then scored on an error by Delta State’s third baseman.

During the third inning, the Argos brought in three runs from Chase Kiefer, Tanner May, and Justin Ambrosino. The final Argos run of the game was by Michael Savas during the sixth inning. The rest of the game was followed by four scores from Delta, including one home run.

The second game of the doubleheader was called during the seventh inning after Delta State went up 8-0. Dana Whetstone, mother of Matt Whetstone and Argos fan, said, “They were so hyped up during the first game because they had jumped out on them from the start.”

During the second game, Ladeavon Matthews stole two bases during the fifth inning; however, Delta State was too far ahead, having earned all eight of their runs during the first two innings.

Saturday’s final game of the series looked good at the beginning for the Argos. During the first inning Kiefer straightaway grounded to second base, followed by three singles from Ambrosino, Matthews and Robert Lopez.  Even with the bases loaded during the first inning, there was no advancement for the Argos and the game eventually ended in a 6-0 win for Delta State.

The Argos will play at home at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, against the Columbus State Cougars. Argo baseball games are free to all UWF students with a Nautilus card. For more information and complete schedules, visit goargos.com.
