Argo athletes continue winning streak over Spring Break

While most students were enjoying Spring Break last week, some Argos were sporting a jersey.

watch The UWF women’s basketball team has had a historic 2016-17 season, and it’s not over yet. On Monday night, UWF defeated Rollins College 72-62 to give UWF the title of NCAA South Region Champions and a ticket to its first-ever NCAA Elite Eight appearance in Columbus, Ohio.

In the regional tournament, UWF had two standout players recognized. Senior guard Alex Coyne received the region’s Most Outstanding Player after she averaged 11 points, 10 assists and two double-doubles over the three games. Senior forward Katie Bobos was also recognized on the all-tournament team after she had a tournament high of 54 points.

The Lady Argos will look to continue their success when they tip off with California Baptist University at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. For more information on the tournament, visit

go to link The UWF baseball team improved its season over the break after sweeping the University of West Georgia on Sunday to make the last six games all victories.

The Argos won the first game against West Georgia 6-5 in extra innings, but UWF came back in the second game and only allowed West Georgia to score one run, which allowed the Argos to win 11-1.

The Argos will host Spring Hill College for a midweek matchup on Wednesday.

The UWF softball team has a 10-win streak since March 7 after sweeping UWG on Sunday.

Senior pitcher Becca Taylor led the Lady Argos to a 3-0 victory over UWG to give them a record of 20-8 this season. In the seven innings that Taylor pitched, she only allowed three hits and struck out two batters. Sunday’s shutout was Taylors 11th win this year.

The UWF men’s tennis team is still undefeated this season after sweeping Midwestern State on Friday at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex.

The UWF women’s tennis team now is ranked seventh with a record of 10-5 after they sealed the 6-3 victory over the 15th-ranked Mustangs on Friday.

Both the men and the women will resume GSC play at 2 p.m. Saturday at home against West Alabama.

The UWF men’s golf team keeps proving its top-ranked status by winning the Southeastern Collegiate title by 14 shots on Tuesday. The men’s golf team now has won four consecutive tournaments and five out of the six they have played in so far this season.

The Argos look to continue their success in the Bobcat Invitational, which is hosted by Georgia College on March 20-21 at the Golf Club of Cuscowilla in Eatonton, Georgia.

The UWF women’s golf team won its first title of the year at the Bama Beach Bash 54-hole tournament in Gulf Shores, Alabama, by 19 strokes. The Lady Argos led after all three days and finished with a score of 895. The runner-up was University of Alabama Birmingham with 915, and West Georgia finished third with 916.

The Argos are now getting ready to host a home tournament – the Argonaut Invitational – on April 3-4 at Marcus Pointe Golf Club.
