Friday the 13th turned out to be lucky for the Pensacola Ice Flyers, who earned their first win of 2017 with a major comeback in the third period. But even luckier was Mackenzie Simmons, a UWF sophomore majoring in political science, who won $1,500 on Scholarship Night.

Simmons said she “could not believe they called [her] name,” and that she is “incredibly thankful.” When Simmons found out the scholarship was funded out of the Ice Flyers’ budget, she said she wished she could “just hug them all!” Simmons is a Pensacola native who said she enjoys Ice Flyers games, attending several a year.

More than six UWF students won scholarships that night. Jamal Bias, a junior math major, won $250, and he said that he didn’t even know it was Scholarship Night. Bias said he was attending the game to cheer on the Ice Flyers, hang out with his friends, and go ice skating after the game. Bias said it wasn’t until he arrived that he found out about the $3,500 in scholarships the Ice Flyers would be giving away.

This is the fifth season that the Ice Flyers organization has hosted Scholarship Night, said Brittany Tindell, vice president of corporate fulfillment for the Ice Flyers. The team hosts Scholarship Night “as a way to show gratitude for the community’s support,” she said.

“We provide at least $3,000 total in scholarships each year. This season, RTS Garage Doors provided three additional scholarships totaling $450.”

While college students can win big bucks on Scholarship Night, they can also save big bucks throughout the entire season. Madyson Lang, a senior majoring in hospitality and Ice Flyers employee, said students receive 50 percent off admission when they show their student ID. Lang has been working for the Ice Flyers for 18 months and said she enjoys seeing her classmates from UWF at the rink, enjoying the game.

The Ice Flyers hold several other promotions, including discounted tickets and theme nights. The weekend of March 4, all tickets—excluding glass seats—will be only $5. You can check out the team’s schedule here. Be sure to show your Nautilus Card for the student discount!
