UWF receives generous gift from beloved professor

On Jan. 20, UWF President Martha Saunders held her first official press conference since her start as president earlier this month . The conference was held to announce the Bill and Ellie Kimball Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship, another gift to the university  by Bob Kimball, a UWF professor of marketing and economics.

Local artists design mural representing Pensacola history and culture

Pensacola’s largest public piece of art in the form of a mural exhibiting Pensacola culture was dedicated on Wednesday.

Local artists Ashton Howard and Evan Levin painted the 3,000-square-foot mural, on the side of the Jefferson Street parking garage, which includes images of Pensacola culture including Spanish Conquistador Don Tristan de Luna, Blue Angels fighter jets, Ft. Pickens and the flag of Spain.

Before we begin, UWF SGA would like to welcome Dr. Saunders to the University of West Florida as our new University President! We look forward to the amazing contributions that Dr. Saunders has in store for the student body as well as the surrounding community.

This Monday we will be kicking off Diversity Week, a week where local student organizations such as the UWF Black Employees Association, Student Government Association, and Student Activities and Office of Diversity plan multiple events throughout the week in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and our University’s continuous dedication to commitment to service and understanding. The Dates and times are scheduled as follows:

Jan. 30th

Diversity Lunch – held in the University Commons Great Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Jan. 31st

Diversity Town Hall, “Let’s taco’bout it” – held in the University Commons Great Hall from 7 to 9 p.m.

Feb. 1st

Diversity Workshop – held in the University Commons room 255 at 7 p.m.

Feb 2nd

Diversity Showcase – held in the University Commons Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Student Government Association elections are approaching quickly; filing for anyone interested in an executive or senator position begins on Feb. 27th. We strongly suggest that you put together a viable campaign plan with a genuine ambition to better our organization and University as a whole, as this is a great opportunity to gain some experience in politics and community affairs. Election voting will commence on April 3rd.

Lastly, Distinguished Teaching Award/Distinguished Staff Award Nominations are underway, nominate the professor that you feel exemplifies the Argonaut spirit, and shows true dedication to the profession and students. The form can be found here.

The SGA staff would like to encourage you to maintain the passion and work ethic that you arrived with in August. An Argonaut pushes to strive for the very best and takes pride in the accomplishments that follow a dedicated and hard working mindset. Two UWF fraternities to go head-to-head for charity

On Saturday, Jan. 28, UWF’s fraternities, Kappa Alpha Psi and Beta Beta Phi Chapter of The Phi Beta Sigma, will go head-to-head in efforts to help raise money for their local charity partners, The March of Dimes.
